What does KASTDA do?

KASTDA is a charity organisation whose members organise fund-raising events to support projects devoted to helping Sri Lankan children orphaned by the Boxing Day Tsunami to overcome their trauma and rebuild happy, secure & successful futures despite the overwhelming devastation & sorrow caused by the events of 26-Dec-2004.

Why & when did KASTDA start?

In the wake of the events of 26-Dec-2004, number 75, Canterbury Road, Margate, Kent, CT9 5AS, UK was inundated with public donations of food, clothing, tents, & other emergency items, as well as offers from well-wishers to help with packing & transport.

Those who were to become the founder members of KASTDA realized that despite the genuine goodwill it was inevitable that public interest and media focus would eventually shift to a new tragedy, leaving the people of Sri Lanka to re-build their own lives.

The founder members of KASTDA therefore saw that it is vital to maintain the focus of attention particularly on the orphaned children to ensure that not just their present needs but also their futures are taken care of. Despite the heroic efforts of the Sri Lankan people it has been the children who have lost the most – their futures.

KASTDA stands for the Kent Association for Sri Lankan Tsunami DAruwo. The volunteer group, which formed as the result of the Tsunami on 26-Dec-2004, chose the Sinhala word for ‘sons and daughters’ – Daruwo – as part of their name to create a high profile focus on the children who will need assistance for many years.
